The Associate Executive Director, under the direct supervision of the Group Vice President, is responsible for leading an energetic and high-performing staff team in Healthy Living, Membership, Kids Club, Aquatics and Youth Development with a goal of providing an exceptional member experience. The preferred candidate should be goal focused and results oriented leader that sets high standards of success and exceeds stated goals. This position fosters a member-focused culture and models relationship building skills in all interactions.  The ideal candidate should possess the leadership skills necessary to successfully communicate and engage with co-workers, members, associates, volunteers, donors and the general public.  Preferred candidate should have a proven track record in staff development, budget accountability, membership sales, community involvement, member-centered customer service and fundraising. 

Job Skills / Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Serve as a role model and advocate of the YMCA Mission, Promise, Values, Voice, and Strategic Vision.
  • Establish, with the branch leadership team, long range plans for membership growth and increase in membership retention, in harmony with overall YMCA objectives.
  • Provides support to Membership and Aquatics Directors, as well as directly oversee Healthy Living, Kids Club and Youth Development Departments. 
  • Assist with board development and play a leadership role in the annual fundraising campaign.
  • Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community and develop positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses and governmental entities. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies in the service delivery area.
  • Provides leadership in the areas of day to day operations of the branch.
  • Communicates across departments to provide a member focused experience that results in increased member retention.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop and direct staff teams under your supervision. Review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Develop, manage and monitor assigned operating budgets to meet or exceed targets. Recommend adjustments to the budget to assure a balanced operation and submit reports on current operations.
  • Develop and direct high-quality member engagement strategies and programs, which support branch and Association mission, goals and strategies.
  • Engage in active listening with members in order to build relationships, understand individual's goals and interests and take the initiative to assist in the achievement of those goals.
  • Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA mission and goals.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in exercise science, human services, recreation, business or related field, plus three years related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Three or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other not-for-profit healthy living agency.
  • Ability to direct assigned operations including volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations and program development/management.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with leading membership program in multiple environments (downtown, suburban, and rural).
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • YMCA Team Leader or Multi-Team/Branch Leader certification preferred.
  • CPR, First Aid & other program specific certifications required upon or after hire.

Institute sound accounting procedures and financial controls. Assign clear accountability and ensure continuous improvement. Have a concern for detail and accuracy and have the ability to delegate responsibility.
  • Personal Growth: Foster a learning environment embracing diverse abilities and approaches. Create a sense of urgency and positive tension to support change. Anticipate challenges that can sidetrack or derail growth and personal learning. Utilize functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform well. Use best practices and demonstrate up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: 
  • Staff development responsibilities will include 3 Exempt, 1 FT and 50+ part time.
  • Must successfully manage $3.2 million annual budget, serving close to 3,000 members.
  •  Annual Campaign goals will total to $59,000+. 
  •  Effectively manage 2 level fitness facility (60,000+ sf).
  •  Maintain all records related to the staff certifications and general operations.

Education Requirements (Any)

Bachelor's degree in exercise science, human services, recreation, business or related field.
3 years related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
