Job Skills / Requirements

Job Summary/Purpose

The Laboratory Supervisor oversees the operations and personnel of the 2nd shift clinical laboratory in accordance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and CAP standards. This role ensures timely, accurate, and quality testing services are delivered to support patient care while maintaining compliance with applicable laboratory regulations. The Supervisor will provide technical guidance, perform testing as needed, and assist with staff training, scheduling, and quality assurance initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise daily operations of the 2nd shift clinical laboratory, ensuring timely and accurate testing in all departments (e.g., Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank).
  • Provide technical expertise and problem-solving assistance to staff during the shift.
  • Ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, OSHA, and hospital standards and protocols.
  • Monitor quality control and proficiency testing; initiate corrective actions when necessary.
  • Perform and document competency assessments in accordance with CAP requirements.
  • Oversee training and orientation of new staff and students; provide ongoing education and mentoring.
  • Maintain and monitor inventory and equipment functionality for the shift; escalate issues as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Laboratory Manager on policy development, process improvements, and performance evaluations.
  • Participate in on-call rotation or weekend coverage if needed.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related scientific field required.

Certification:

  • Must hold current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through ASCP or equivalent national certifying body.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical laboratory experience required.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong technical knowledge across multiple laboratory disciplines.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS) and Microsoft Office Suite.

Education Requirements (All)

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related scientific field

Certification Requirements (All)

MLS certification through ASCP or equivalent national certifying body
