Job Skills / Requirements

Reporting to Professor Patrick Martin as supervisor, the Studio Technician supports the studio art program through maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing equipment; preparing exhibits; organizing work areas, supplies, and tools; supervising student employees; ensuring safety training and safety management; and performing other related duties as needed. 
            
Essential Job Functions:
  • Maintain functional facilities in all studios, including electric kilns and annealers as well as all gas kilns, furnaces, reheating chambers, and other hot glass equipment, preemptive maintenance may include regular parts replacement and/or repair.
  • Routine maintenance of functional facilities in all studios, including
  • all kilns, furnaces, wheels, clay mixers, reheating chambers, and all other equipment essential to studio operations.
  • Supervise the safe storage and use of all chemicals and materials.  All chemical storage must comply with OSHA safety standards, which should be determined in collaboration with Centre’s Director of Laboratory Resources & Safety.
  • Organize woodshop, storage, and gallery areas in the Jones Visual Arts Center; build shelves or cabinets as necessary for optimizing storage. 
  • Maintain wood and metal workshop, including checking out tools, repairing tools, training students in proper use of tools, and overseeing safe operation of shop resources.  
  • Assist the Director of the Aegon Gallery in planning and installing art for exhibitions.  Maintain professional appearance of gallery, including walls, pedestals, and lights. 
  • Pack artwork for storage or shipping as directed by visiting artists and/or art faculty. 
  • Train and supervise student workers in the woodshop, studios, and gallery.  Prioritize and assign student work schedules in collaboration with Supervisor. Ensure completion of tasks and the accuracy of student timecards prior to approving them. 
  • Demonstrate for students the proper use of tools, power tools, and welding equipment as needed or as requested by faculty to support classroom assignments (building a cradled panel for painting, e.g.), exhibits, or other related needs.
  • Respond to “just-in-time” requests, such as unexpected trips to local stores to buy needed items for gallery displays, or to unanticipated classroom challenges that may arise.
  • Support the faculty and students in providing technical assistance in 3D printing and laser engraving.

  • Work with Supervisor to develop and post schedule, with notice of changes.
  • Proactively communicate with Supervisor to assess studio and building needs.
  • Work with Supervisor on determining maintenance work and repairs.
  • Establish and maintain student Rules and Regulations acknowledgement contracts.
  • Assist faculty with ordering supplies and equipment for studios.
 
Marginal Job Functions
Contribute to the overall success of the department by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned. 
 
Education
  • High School diploma required.
  • College diploma, Art Studio degrees, or technical school certification preferred.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
  • Significant technical experience in ceramic, glass, and sculpture fields preferred.
  • Woodworking at the level of intermediate cabinetry or joinery skills.
  • Troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of kiln and furnace control systems, along with desire and self-initiative to further develop these skills.
  • Troubleshooting of electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems. 
  • Welding at a basic level.
  • Instructing others in the maintenance and safe use of power and hand tools in a wood and metal workshop.
  • Providing oversight of repair and maintenance work done by contractors.
  • Driving. The Studio Technician must hold a valid driver’s license for needed errands (trips to Lowes, e.g.).
            
Clerical:  
  • Performing basic computer skills (email, ordering supplies, scheduling, and online timecard submission, e.g.). 
Organization:  
  • Organizing storage and proper use of supplies.  
  • Supervising student employees and art students with respect and care in support of a student-centered environment. 
  • Interpersonal:  
  • Demonstrating a demeanor which is approachable, positive, and friendly in interactions with faculty, staff, and students.  
  • Working through Supervisor to mitigate conflicts that may arise to ensure supportive, positive, and professional workplace for self and others. 
  • Modeling good work ethic for student employees. 
  • Being self-motivated and sharing new ideas with Supervisor for functional improvements to the space and/or operations. 
  • Working well independently or collaboratively, as needed. 
 
Physical Requirements:
  • Some pushing, pulling, lifting, ladder use, kneeling to access and move equipment and materials.  Lifting would not exceed 50 lbs.
  • Moving easily about campus is necessary.
