Job Skills / Requirements

Catholic Charities of Louisville, Migration and Refugee Services department is looking for a patient, well-organized, and adaptable ESL instructor to work with adult refugee students.

In this role, the ESL instructor will teach morning and afternoon ESL classes to adult refugees at the Beginning ESL literacy and Low beginning ESL levels with a focus on survival English and work skills to prepare them for work and daily life in our community. The instructor must be comfortable teaching students from diverse cultures with a constant change in the number of participants due to new arrivals and job placements. The school operates with an open enrollment policy, so new students are expected to join classes every week. The instructor must have a strong desire for cultural exchange and be able to adapt the communication and teaching methods to individual classrooms.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS:

1.  Provide in-person group instructions and tutoring for students.

2. Plan lessons and activities appropriate for students’ English proficiency levels.

3. Connect students with resources and other services in the community.

4..  Record students’ attendance and progress.

5.. When working with volunteers, provide training and prepare lessons and activities for individual or small group instruction. 

6. Ensures that all documentation relating to ELT (English Language Training) is recorded in the agency computer database programs and/or required forms.

7. Drive clients to ELT orientations if needed.

8.  Participate in agency-wide activities.

9.. Other duties assigned by the supervisor

  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work under pressure, effectively utilize time and resources and use sound judgment when making decisions.
  • Significant ability to multi-task and respond to deadlines.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of people.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree with experience teaching ESL to adults.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Ability to provide high-quality instructions to different English proficiency levels, from literacy to advanced level students.
  • Must have good technology-related skills for teaching in a virtual classroom like Zoom or Google Classroom and other programs for online teaching.
  • Must be able to communicate well verbally and in writing with colleagues, clients, and other community members.
  • Must have good organizational and critical thinking skills.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of any information encountered.
  • Must demonstrate self-confidence, enthusiasm, and initiative.


Education Requirements (Any)

A Bachelor’s degree with experience teaching ESL to adults
