We provide help and create hope for the poor and vulnerable through a wide range of programs, assisting clients of all races, backgrounds and beliefs. Our service area includes 24 counties throughout Central Kentucky.

Intern Position: May 19th 2025, through August 1st 2025
Part-time 18-20 hours a week
Salary: $20.00 an hour

 
The Refugee School Impact Intern will work directly with the MRS Youth Team to provide support before, during, and after the 6-week summer program. Interns will learn how to plan and execute summer program tasks, assist MRS staff with their needs, assist JCPS teachers in the classroom, and be a support to the students. The interns may help with interpretation needs throughout the summer program. They will also help with set-up and clean-up as needed. Interns will assist MRS staff with school registration needs and activity time once the summer program ends. The position lasts for 11 weeks throughout the summer working part-time. The internship will tentatively begin on May 19th, 2025 and end on August 1st, 2025 with a total of 224 hours during that time frame. Additional weekly transportation stipend will be provided.

Essential Duties and Tasks: 
  1.  Support the Youth Team in organizing and running a Summer Program for newly arrived refugee children (ages 6-17) on Mondays through Wednesdays.
  2.  Lead small group discussions on job shadowing and career pathways on Thursdays (ages 14-17). 
  3.  Assist ESL teachers in the classroom.
  4.  Supervise and engage with children during field trips.
  5.  Provide occasional interpretation support between children, families, and Catholic Charities staff as needed.
  6.  Help set up and clean up meals, snacks, and activities throughout the day.
  7.  Encourage participation and model respectful behavior for children and youth.
  8.  Assist with school registration and other tasks for youth and families.
 
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This work is performed part-time in an office setting with moderate noise due to computers, printers, and people moving about and part-time assisting in classrooms/community activities with youth. 
 
EFFORT:
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods. 
  • Specific vision abilities include close and distant vision. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  •  Ability to take initiative, work independently, and proactively address challenges. 
  • Capable of working under pressure, managing time effectively, and using sound judgment in decision-making. 
  • Ability to travel frequently within the community ($50 transportation stipend).
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Significant ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
 
 
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT:
telephone, computer, printer, copy machine, calculator, scanner, and shredder
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  
 
  • Fluency in  Spanish, Kinyarwanda, Swahili, Arabic, Dari, or Pashto is preferred 
  • Cultural competency and an intimate knowledge of relevant refugee and immigrant communities in Louisville preferred
