Payroll Specialist (Finance)

Overview

The Payroll Specialist is an integral part of BTI's corporate team. Partnering with both the Human Resources (HR) and Finance departments, this role will allow BTI to manage payroll processes in-house providing a more streamlined experience for employees and management. The Payroll Specialist will lead all payroll initiatives to include establishing and enforcing bi-weekly processes, verifying employee data appropriately and managing all payroll related inquiries in a timely manner, partnering with external supports. Currently, this is an individual contributor role.

Job Skills / Requirements

The Payroll Specialist will support the organization as follows;

  • Regularly review and maintain data ensuring the accuracy of payroll records
  • Establish and conduct regularly scheduled audits of payroll records
  • Full-cycle management of bi-weekly payroll processes to include providing consolidated data to managers for their Quality Assurance (QA)
  • Compute accurate wages and deductions in line with employee records
  • Cooperate with different departments to increase payroll service performance
  • Support vendor(s) and employees with garnishment and lien management (included court and support orders).
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws, including remittance of payroll taxes
  • Handle employee complaints about incorrect payments and resolve discrepancies
  • Prepare annual payroll tax documents in compliance with the state and federal taxation laws
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES

The ideal candidate will have the following;

  • Strong working knowledge of labor laws and federal regulations concerning payroll (specific experience in state application of minimum wage laws preferred).
  • The ability to maintain a strong degree of confidentiality.
  • Signing a non-disclosure agreement will be a part of the hiring process.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Strong computer and excel reporting proficiency.
  • Ability to communicate and establish processes in careful detail, clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to analyze complex payroll data accurately.
  • Demonstrate stong time and task management capabilities.
  • Prioritization and attention to detail is key.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with other departments efficiently and amiably.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field, or
  • Equivalent combination of experience and higher-level training or certification.
  • Three (3) plus years' experience in similar role.
  • Three (3) plus years' experience supporting payroll in government contracting.
  • Understanding of Federal and State regulations.
  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification strongly preferred.
  • Recent and active working knowledge of payroll processing practices and guidelines.
  • Technical expertise with the ability to learn payroll systems quickly. (Specifically WinTeam experience is a plus).

Clearance Requirement: There is no clearance required for this position.

Supervision: This position is an individual contributor role with the expected ability to work autonomously with little supervision. This includes the ability to discern appropriate practices and reporting requirements without direction. This role has no direct reports.

Travel Expectations: The position is based at the corporate headquarters location. Travel will likely remain under > 5%.   

Working Conditions: The location of this position is a typical office location with computers, fax machines and other general office equipment and furniture. The position is largely sedentary with expected walking throughout the office and ability to lift up to twenty (20) pounds.
