Job Skills / Requirements

Position Summary:  
Assist other line personnel by assembling materials and tools in preparation for work.  Develop the skills and job knowledge required to be promoted to Lineman such as climbing, knowledge of construction standards, safety rules and work procedures while working under close supervision.  Perform other duties as required.

 Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities:
Assemble material and operate/maintain tools and equipment as required to meet the safety operating needs of the job.  Learn to climb and work as member of crew under close supervision and instruction.  Learn to read and interpret blueprints and any other specifications for construction of lines and substations. Learn to operate equipment used in line construction and maintenance.  Learn and perform all tasks and duties contained in a Lineman job description.  Learn to watch and advise linemen of hazards while working on energized lines and equipment.  Assist in line and substation construction and maintenance.  Learn to work with hazardous materials, clean up oil and chemical spills and properly dispose of contaminated materials. Learn the Cooperative's safetry rules, first aid procedures, proper work practices; responsible for operating in accordance with these procedures. Care for and maintain tools and equipment.

Education and Experience Requirements:  
High School Diploma or equivalent certificate.  One (1) year of related construction experience preferred.  Obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL) within the first nine (9) months of employment. 

Physical and Environmental Requirements:
Requires working outside in varying environmental locations from dry and cultivated fields to wooded and diverse areas of undergrowth and in varying weather conditions, and temperature extremes with extreme ranges of humidity and dryness.  Requires working day or night, inside or outside, in all weather conditions.  Requires lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying weight equal to 50 pounds or more.  Requires pushing, pulling and reaching above the shoulders.  Requires kneeling, crawling, bending or twisting while lifting arms above shoulders and stooping for extended periods of time; in order to accomplish duties while grasping, pulling or pushing objects or manipulating tools. Requires walking and/or standing for extended periods of time, which includes routine foot patrol of transmission lines and facilities.  Requires sitting for extended periods of time while riding in a motor vehicle.  Requires wearing personal safety equipment.  Requires manual and detailed hand work using both hands.  Also may require repetitive manual tasks.  Requires working overtime and traveling at times with short notice.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a Class A CDL (Standard Transmission) and the appropriate endorsements within 9 months of employment. Must live within a 30-minute response time to BEPC Office for emergency response.  Requires hearing within normal range, hearing aids are permitted.  Requires vision within normal range, corrective lenses are permitted.
