GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
This role requires a blend of technical knowledge, leadership skills, and a keen eye for detail to ensure Spartanburg Water grounds remain aesthetically pleasing, safe, and functional year-round. Under general supervision, coordinates work assignments and directs groundskeepers, gardeners, and other grounds maintenance personnel as well as light handiwork at facilities in the performance of assignments, ensuring efficient, proper and safe completion of tasks. This position will serve as a building maintenance liaison, not just grounds, on items associated with basic superintendent duties. This position reports to the Director of Administrative Services.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversees a team of groundskeepers, scheduling their work and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely. Plan and oversee landscape related and light maintenance tasks. Responsible for hiring temporary staff.
- Manage external contractors that perform ongoing landscape services and special projects.
- Manage the upkeep of lawns, professional landscaping, grounds, trees, shrubs and flowers. Tasks include mowing, blowing, trimming, spray treatments, edging, cleaning equipment, planting, mulching, irrigation and pressure washing. Plan and execute landscaping operations.
- Responsible for performing groundskeeping and facility repair tasks as needed.
- Inspect grounds, plants, and trees to ascertain needs and apply appropriate care.
- Performs light facility related duties. Items include but are not limited to installing shelves, hanging pictures, painting, moving furniture and light facility related repairs.
- Monitor and manage pest control and disease prevention for plants and landscapes.
- Ensure and enforce safety standards and practices among staff, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment, ensuring it is in good working condition and scheduling/coordinating repairs as needed.
- Assist in managing the grounds budget, including purchasing supplies and equipment. Monitor budget and track expenditures.
- Work with HR to hire grounds staff as needed.
- Conducts training and managing employee performance to create high-functioning teams.
- Coordinate small facility projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Requires proven work experience as a Building and Grounds Maintenance Superintendent
or similar role with a strong knowledge of landscaping techniques and ground maintenance practices as well as light handyman abilities. Ability to operate and maintain landscaping equipment and knowledge of horticulture and pest management. Chemical Applicator’s License a plus. Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects and working outdoors in various weather conditions. Strong supervisory and leadership skills are needed with excellent problem-solving abilities. High school diploma or equivalent; degree in landscaping or horticulture a plus. Must have a valid driver’s license.
