SMSSI is hiring a full-time Paralegal Associate to join the Legal/HR team. This role will work standard daylight hours, Monday through Friday. This position will be based in Pittsburgh and may offer a hybrid structure in the future based on performance and managers discretion.
Under direct supervision, the Paralegal Associate applies basic knowledge of the legal system and substantive and procedural law and human resource policies and practices to provide legal and human resource support service to attorneys and HR managers of the department. They will provide basic legal research, prepare and respond to requests for information and claims to enable attorneys to deliver legal services more efficiently and economically.
Responsibilities:
- Responds to administrative claims, third-party subpoenas, discovery requests, court orders and other requests.
- Provides assistance to the attorneys within the SMSSI Legal & HR Department for legal research and analysis for claims and review of policies.
- Assists with legal research and analysis and interprets findings at a basic level.
- Completes simple to moderately complex legal filings.
- Obtains and responds to legal documents and information from governmental agencies as required on behalf of SMSSI.
- Responds to third-party subpoenas seeking protected health information on an as-needed basis.
- Performs legal research utilizing both local and electronic research tools.
- Develops and maintains a basic understanding of internal processes and procedures.
- Prepare responses and exhibits for administrative proceedings and litigation, prepare witness testimony, submit various administrative agency filings.
Qualifications:
- High School and 2 years of experience as a legal assistant, OR Associate’s Degree and 1 year of experience as a legal assistant, OR Paralegal certification and 1 year of experience as a legal assistant, OR Bachelor’s degree and 6 months of experience as a legal assistant.
- Paralegal certificate strongly preferred
- Knowledge of employment law concepts and principles,
- Experience in drafting employee policies and procedure manuals.
- Experience writing legal briefs and memorandums.
