Overview

The national offices of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), based in Louisville, Kentucky, serve and work with mid-councils, congregations and partner organizations to carry forth the mission of Jesus Christ in the  World.  The work at the Presbyterian Center is carried out by approximately 400 staff members in several national entities: Office of the General Assembly, Presbyterian Investment and Loan, Presbyterian Mission Agency, Presbyterian Publishing Corporation, Presbyterian Women and the Administrative Services Group.

Position Purpose: Responsible for copyediting, fact-checking, proofreading, editing and writing on assigned projects; assisting editors and project managers by working with writers and editing articles for publication (print and digital); participating in the editorial planning process for Presbyterians Today and other publications as needed.

Job Skills / Requirements

  1. Copyedit, fact-check and proofread print and digital content for accuracy, grammar, spelling, punctuation, English usage, house style, fairness and clarity on assigned projects.
  2. Identify flaws in focus, structure, organization and tone in texts, making suitable recommendations for their correction. Identify potential ethical or legal issues, including libel, falsification and plagiarism.
  3. Write or edit photo cuts and captions, headlines and story leads.
  4. Assist editor of Presbyterians Today and other project managers by working with writers, editing articles for publication and participating in issue planning.
  5. Attend staff meetings.
  6. Other duties as assigned 

Essential Position Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ copyediting/proofreading experience

Required Skills: 

  • Superior knowledge of the English language
  • Strong writing ability
  • Proficiency in use of AP Stylebook
  • Mastery of Microsoft Word, including editing and tracking functions

Helpful Skills:

  • Familiarity with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
  • Experience with content management systems like WordPress
  • Proficiency in the English language and one or more additional languages very helpful. 

Required Competencies:

  • Ability to size up editing issues quickly and deal with them appropriately while meeting deadlines
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and follow them through to completion in a timely manner
  • Ability to deal collegially and tactfully with writers and internal staff
  • Ability to concentrate despite distractions, work effectively under stress and accept changes in routines and duties
  • Ability to show initiative, taking necessary action instead of waiting to be instructed, and willingness to take responsibility for the quality of the work

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to sit for long periods of time
  • Able to see, hear, speak, type, write and move from one location to another while performing tasks
